    Welcome to Mrs. Musial's 5th Grade Science Class

    Day 1 & 2
    Get acquainted week: safety rules, organization, learning names, and learning the building.

    Supplies Needed for My Class:
    1) 1 container of disinfecting wipes (For clean up after Labs)
    2) 1 empty 2L pop bottle (No green bottles please. These bottles will be used to grow
    plants and make aquariums to study pond ecosystem)
    3) 1 red pen
    4) 1 Spiral notebook and matching folder
    5) 1 pack 3x5 index cards
    6) pencils
    7) 1 black sharpie
    8) colored pencils
    9) 1 glue stick
    10) 1 dry erase marker

    ***Science Homework will be once per week, and must be completed by Friday. It is always to study with a parent and get their signature in your planner. That signature means they studied with you and you know the material.***

  • Chapter 10 Lesson 2 "How Can People Conserve Resources?"

    State Standard: The students will explain how people can help with conservation.

    Read and discuss pages 316-320. 

    Lab: Complete pollution experiments and make final observations. Students may take home eco-columns.

  • Chapter 13 "Earth, Moon, and Beyond"

    State Standard: The students will explain how the rotation of Earth on its axis causes night and day. They will also be able to explain that the Earth revolves on a tilted axis around the Sun in 365 day, and the tilt and location of the Earth in its orbit causes the seasons.

    Lesson 1: "How Does the Earth's Orbit Affect the Seasons?"

    Begin each class with the Astronomy Picture of the day on the Smart Board as the students enter the classroom. When the bell rings, have a 2 minute discussion about the picture and the technology used to obtain the picture.

    Read and discuss pages 400-404. Add vocabulary to student spiral notebook.

    Lab: Use Models of the Earth and Sun to demonstrate rotation and revolving.

  • Chapter 13 Lesson 2 "How Do the Earth and Moon Compare?"

    State Standard: The students will describe that some planets have moons, and list the Characteristics of the Earth's Moon.

    Lab: Use model and flashlight to demonstrate moon phases.

  • Chapter 13 Lesson 3 "What Makes Up Our Solar System?"

    State Standards: The students will explain how our Solar System contains the Sun and all the celestial bodies that orbit the Sun. This will include all the planets, their distance from the Sun, their size, and composition. They will also describe asteroids, comets, and meteors.

    Read and discuss pages 416-424. Add vocabulary and drawings to spiral notebooks.

    Watch Brainpops: "Solar System", Each planet has a video, "Constellation", "Galaxy", "Comets", "Asteroids", and "Milky Way".

    Lab: Students will use Post-Its and a meter stick to Name, describe, and place the planets in their relative distance from the Sun.

  • Chapter 17 Lesson 1 "What Is Sound?"

    State Standard: The students will show how sound is made by vibrating an object and needs a medium to travel. They will also describe the relationship between rate of vibration and pitch.

    Read and discuss 546 - 553 and add sound vocabulary to spiral notebook.

    Watch Brainpop: "Sound", "Voice", "Strings", "Percussion", "Wood Winds", and "Brass"

    Labs: "Making Sound" page 545, Use tuning forks to show pitch and vibration, and use oscilloscope to see the size of wave length with different pitches.

  • Chapter 17 Lesson 2 "What Is Light?"

    State Standard:  I can show that light travels in a straight line unless it interacts with an object. When it interacts with an object it will be absorbed, reflected, or refracted. It does not need a medium to travel. Light travels faster than sound.
